They're moving again!

After they had been white like that for a week or two now (they're normally transparent) I bought a water test kit to find that my tap water is off the scale on the pH and also exceptionally hard. I haven't figured out what to do about the hardness problem but figuring the pH was probably the bigger issue, yesterday I began slowly dripping in tap water that I neutralized with some acid. It didn't take long for them to begin moving around more and today that seems to be continuing, with the last one that I have that hasn't turned white being the most active despite that he was being as inactive as the others in the last few days.

Someone on reddit suggested before I had tested the water that the white shells might be because of very hard water. IDK how much I believe that, since I still have one that is as transparent as can be. That makes me think that this is some sort of disease, though maybe it's enabled by the high pH or very hard water.

Here's the whole tank at the moment. I need more plant variety but the plants at Meijer were ridiculously expensive and I didn't think to see what PetValu had while I was there determining that they have nothing to treat hard water.

I also have this flower vase which was the first thing I made, putting some moss from the front yard in it. I found two sticks in some peat moss (a product that's dead and looks like dirt) so I put them in there now. I'm rather amused by how much the moss is growing, and even by how the green algae is kind of taking over. I want to move some of the moss to my 10 gallon tank but I can't convince myself to disturb this.
