I'm working on a 3D printed aquarium hood, as I'm not happy with the LED strips I put on the hood I bought. Here's what I have so far...
That's 6 individual pieces bolted together. There's also a slot that a zip tie goes through around the bulb base to keep it tight around the bulb holder so that it doesn't fall through.
It's already brighter than the LED strips, but the plastic sheets I plan to fill in the "window" holes, I plan to cover with foil so that all of the light is reflected down into the water. I'm going to have a vent in the top for heat to escape. I was thinking about a fan, but hot air is supposed to rise so in theory it should take care of itself. I still need to work out how the filter is going to fit into it, so this isn't going to be done soon.
I do wonder if I shouldn't have a bottom to it to separate the bulb from the water. As it is, water will certainly condense on the top of the hood, and thus drip down over the bulb, but that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as water doesn't get into the bulb, and it doesn't look like it can.
Though, now that I'm looking at it, there's this cardboard tube in the bulb holder that insulates the neutral part of the bulb base from the outside of it, and that slightly hangs into the hood. So it'll get wet, soak the cardboard, and then it's not going to work so well as an insulator anymore.
So, fuck, maybe this isn't going to work.
