FORTRAN is the answer

As I understand it, FORTRAN is still alive and well because it tends to do smarter things when working with math. I don't know if that's limited to large data sets or what. I know there are fast math libs out there, don't know if it still would be faster jumping into the other code.

If you really feel like wasting more time in assembly, you might be able to get something out of SIMD.
